PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For several weeks now, fireworks in the middle of the night have been rattling residents in Philadelphia and throughout the region. Now, police are investigating two serious incidents overnight involving incendiary devices — one in which a boy was hurt, and another in which a woman in a wheelchair was attacked.

Officers in Kensington heard a loud explosion at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and they ran over to Custer Street, between Kensington and Allegheny avenues. There, police say, a boy ran into a house after badly hurting his left hand.

Chief inspector Scott Small says the boy and some other kids had been playing with some kind of explosive.

"We’re thinking along the lines — something like an M80 or a possible quarter stick of dynamite or something in that range," he said.

The boy was taken to the hospital, his mother was by his side. His hand is in very bad shape. The injuries are not life-threatening, but they are certainly life-altering. He is expected to survive.

Four hours later, and three miles away, at 24th and Lehigh streets in North Philadelphia, police say several teens tossed fireworks at a woman in a wheelchair and a man who were talking.

The woman was hit in the chest, and the man injured his arm. Both refused to get any treatment, and they’re expected to be okay. So far, no one has been arrested.
