A new “Superman” movie is flying onto the big screen.
Deadline confirmed that author Ta-Nehisi Coates is penning a reboot feature for Warner Bros. and DC.
Film director J.J. Abrams, who has titles such as “Star Wars,” “Lost,” “Westworld,” and “Lovecraft Country,” under his belt, is producing under his label Bad Robot.
For now, no plot has been revealed and no cast or director are attached to the project.
Coates is no stranger to the comic book world, having previously written a “Black Panther” and a “Captain America” series for Marvel Comics.

“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” said Coates in an exclusive statement to Shadow and Act. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America's most iconic mythic hero."
“There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told," Abrams said in a separate statement to the outlet.
"We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity."
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Coates' screenplay will be centered around a Black Superman.
There is precedent in the comics for this: writer Grant Morrison and artist Doug Mahnke introduced Calvin Ellis in the “Final Crisis” comics, the Superman of parallel Earth-23.
Ellis, who Morrison based on Barack Obama, became the President of the United States on his world while continuing his heroic efforts as Superman.
Henry Cavill has previously expressed his desire to get back in the cape after gaining recognition for the role of the superhero in 2013’s “Man of Steel.”

The Man of Steel has been getting a lot of attention lately. Earlier this week, he soared back onto the small screen for The CW’s newest DC-inspired series, “Superman & Lois” starring Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch.
In this version, Kal-El and Lois Lane are parents to two teenage boys, one of whom begins manifesting powers.
Fan anticipation has also been high for "Zack Snyder's Justice League," a new director's cut of the 2017 feature, also starring Henry Cavill and debuting March 17 on HBO Max.
