PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Tom Moore has covered 76ers basketball for more than three decades. A sports columnist for the Bucks County Courier Times, he is one of the top sports journalists in the region.
Moore has covered a lot of players during his years on the Sixers beat, including the great Charles Barkley, who was a bit more open with the media than most players.
"It was very interesting, because in those days, they practiced at Saint Joe's and practice was open and so was the locker room after practice," he recalled.
"So you would go sit in the locker room and Barkley would talk, he would go take a shower, you would wait for him to come back and he would continue talking. You were afraid to leave until he left. And he would answer questions about anything and everything."
Moore witnessed some great moments during his career covering the Sixers, but also some lost seasons. One of those seasons was the 1992-93 campaign which saw the team go 26-56. But Moore remembers the new head coach thought that team was going places.
"Doug Moe told us in training camp, he thought the Sixers were going to win 50 games. Then the season started," Moore recounted.
"He said the reason he thought they were going to win 50 games is because he didn't realize how bad the team was and they were playing against each other."
Moe was fired just 56 games into his only season in Philadelphia.
