PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Amy Cohen has been at the helm of the field hockey program at Division II West Chester University since 2011. On her watch, the Golden Rams won three National Championships.
Cohen has won 80% of her games as head coach at West Chester and that includes national titles in 2011, 2012 and 2019. How does she get through to her players?
"Some people learn by doing, some learn by watching and some learn by just verbally, you’ve got to explain exactly what you’re doing. You just have to figure out who your audience is and how they learn best," she said.
"There’s only been a handful of kids I've ever struggled with trying to reach because I feel like, as a coach, I know there's not just one right way to do something, so it's your job as an educator to figure out how to teach."
As for her favorite part of the job, Cohen said it's the people.
"You get to hang out with some of the best people. Whether it's the staff and support staff, my assistant coaches and then obviously, most particularly, the players, I just love hanging out with those student-athletes every day."
