PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — When Danny Green held his end-of-season press conference after the Sixers’ second-round defeat to the Atlanta Hawks, he said that Doc Rivers had told him, "Oh you'll be back. You ain't going nowhere."
That much is true.
Overnight, a source confirmed that the 34-year-old is re-signing with the Sixers on a two-year, $20 million contract, which was first reported by Green's "Inside The Green Room" podcast co-host Harrison Sanford.
Sanford also reported that second year is a team option.
Also according to Sanford, Green had free agent discussions with many teams, including the Nets, Celtics, Bucks, Bulls and Warriors — adding that there could have been a possible sign and trade with Brooklyn involving Spencer Dinwiddie, who ended up with the Washington Wizards, per reports.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski has a conflicting report, saying there is no second-year option, citing Green's agent.
Re-signing Green is an important move by the 76ers because of his veteran leadership, championship NBA experience and three-point shooting ability. And one could argue they really missed him in the playoffs against Atlanta after he injured his calf.
In his first season with Philadelphia, Green average 9.5 points per game and shot just over 40% from three-point distance. In their first-round series against the Wizards, Green shot 46.4% percent from behind the arc.
It will be interesting to see how fans respond to Green returning after he recently caught a lot of headlines for comments he made about the effect the fan base can have on players, such as Ben Simmons, when he was struggling in the playoffs.
It's not the first time in Philadelphia sports history that some fans didn't like critical remarks about them. Athletes of Philly past have continued to play here, have success and bond with the fans after situations like this.
