PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Hours after the Philadelphia Eagles lost their offensive coordinator to a head coaching job, the Eagles are on the verge of having to replace their defensive coordinator, according to a report.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Johnathan Gannon is finalizing a deal become the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
Earlier Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts announced they hired Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their new coach.
Gannon, 39, has served as defensive coordinator of the Eagles for the last two seasons, over which they improved from a 4-11-1 record to an appearance last Sunday in Super Bowl LVII.
In 2020, the year before Gannon came, the Eagles’ defense ranked 20th in scoring defense at 26.1 points per game and 19th in total yards allowed with 5,810.
Last season, they finished 8th in the league in points allowed at 20.2 points per game, and second in yards allowed with 5,125.
Philadelphia also sacked quarterbacks 70 times in 2022, the third-highest single-season total in NFL history.
The Eagles allowed the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers to each score just seven points in their postseason games against Philadelphia, before Kansas City’s offense put up 31 of the team’s 38 points against the Eagles in the Super Bowl.
