PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — When Howie Roseman drafted Carson Wentz in 2016, he likely envisioned a long-term relationship with several Super Bowl runs.

However, it became clear early in the offseason it was time for a divorce.

The Eagles agreed to a deal last month to send Wentz to Indianapolis. The deal became official this week, ending Wentz's time in Philadelphia after only five seasons. After a frustrating 2020 campaign for Wentz and the rest of the organization, Roseman and Wentz, along with Wentz's agent, began to talk about a fresh start for both sides.

"There were a lot of honest conversations with him and his representative about where he was and the feeling that maybe it was best to kind of move on," said Roseman. "We told him it would have to work out for both sides and I think that that's what the trade is with Indy."

Wentz was one of several veterans the Eagles sent packing in the early part of the off-season. While Wentz was traded away, DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery and Malik Jackson were released. The Eagles also lost Jalen Mills through free agency. However, veterans Jason Kelce and Brandon Graham were retained, and Roseman talked about the importance of Kelce and Graham both on and off the field.

"Not only were they Pro Bowl players last year but they're culture setters for us," Roseman said. "As we go forward with 19 draft picks in the next two years, we need great players and great people."

The Eagles are also going forward with a new coaching staff. Nick Sirianni took over after Doug Pederson was fired a week after the end of the regular season. Roseman praised Pederson at his news conference, but added he is excited about the future with Sirianni and his staff.

"We spent the last few months with this new coaching staff," said Roseman. "Coach and his staff are all ball all the time. They love talking about players, they love talking about scheme, and it's been really fun."

Now that the era of Wentz and Pederson is in the rear-view mirror, Roseman and Sirianni will turn their attention to next month's NFL Draft. The Eagles appear to be in a rebuilding mode, so this draft is a critical one for the franchise. Despite the changes, Roseman emphasized the Eagles will always be grateful for Wentz's work in Philadelphia.

"We're very appreciative of his contributions to us," Roseman said. "Obviously, with the trade we made, we felt like it was in the best interest for both parties, and we wish him and his family the best in Indianapolis."
