PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Eddie Khayat, a former Philadelphia Eagles head coach and a starting defensive tackle on the 1960 NFL championship team, has died, according to the team. He was 89.
The Eagles announced on Monday that Khayat died on Friday, Dec. 6 in Nashville, surrounded by family.
Khayat played in Philadelphia for six seasons, from 1958 to 1961, then from 1964 to 1965. He is one of only four players in franchise history to become head coach. He was brought in mid-season to replace Jerry Williams in 1971.
In all, Khayat played for 10 years in the NFL and spent another 25 coaching for teams across the country.
He was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame as a player on the 1960 NFL championship team, when the Eagles beat the Packers — Vince Lombardi's only playoff loss of his career.
Khayat is survived by his wife and two sons.
