PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For now, Jake Voracek, James van Riemsdyk and Shayne Gostisbehere are still Philadelphia Flyers.
In the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft on Wednesday, the newly minted Seattle Kraken passed over more-expensive veterans left unprotected by the Flyers in favor of 23-year-old left winger Carsen Twarynski.
Flyers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Chuck Fletcher released a statement saying that Kraken general manager Ron Francis and his group in Seattle took time and effort to prepare for the draft.
"And with Carsen," he said, "they have added a good, young piece to their team. Carsen is a hard-working player who has grown considerably in his four seasons since he was drafted in our organization. We wish nothing but the best for him in Seattle."
Twarynski was a 2016 third-round pick for the Flyers and has played 22 regular season games for them, scoring one goal. He has played most for their American Hockey League affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
By picking Twarynski, the Kraken opted against picking up Voracek's contract, which has an average annual value of $8.25 million; van Riemsdyk's contract, which has a $7 million average annual value; and Gostisbehere's contract, which has a $4.5 million average annual value.
Prior to the expansion draft, the Flyers disclosed that they had just under $9.4 million of cap space.
The Kraken picked one player from each of the 30 other NHL teams, except the Vegas Golden Knights.
