PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — JJ Redick, who played two seasons for the 76ers, is retiring. On Tuesday morning, the 37-year-old Dallas Maverick announced on social media that he is leaving the NBA.
His two seasons in Philadelphia were very competitive for the Sixers. And for himself, personally, they were two of the best-scoring campaigns of his NBA career.
Redick signed with the Sixers for one year and $23 million prior to the 2017-18 season. At that point, the team had missed the playoffs for five consecutive seasons amid a dramatic rebuild. The addition of Redick -- a sharp-shooting guard who made a name for himself at Duke -- was a sign that it was time for the Sixers to win again.
They certainly did -- finishing 52-30 in the regular season, good for a surprising three-seed in the playoffs. They lost in the second round to the Celtics.
The next year Redick re-signed for another one-year deal worth $12.250 million, and the Sixers once again got to the second round of the playoffs, only to lose on Kawhi Leonard's Game 7 buzzer beater, which bounced four times on the rim before going through the net in Toronto.
The organization didn't bring Redick back for a third season.
He instead went to New Orleans for 2019-20 and began the 2020-21 season with them before being dealt to Dallas, which would be the final stop of his lengthy NBA career.
One thing that will always stand out in recollections Redick's brief time in Philadelphia is the bond he built with star Joel Embiid on the court. Their two-man game was very effective.
Redick embraced playing in a sports city and his time in town was definitely one not to forget.
