PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Holy Family University women’s basketball team is making history. For the first time, the Tigers have advanced to the Elite 8 of the Division II NCAA tournament.

They will battle Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

The 30-4 Tigers got here by beating Assumption, Southern Connecticut State and Daemen in the first three rounds of the NCAA tournament by an average of more than 15 points.

“Such an amazing ride with this group, such a special group,” said head coach Bernadette Laukaitis. “I feel like every year, I feel every group’s special, and every year, it’s just a different type of special. With this group, the resiliency that we had, so many different kinds of obstacles along our way throughout the year, but just somehow found a way each and every time.”

In the Elite 8, the Tigers will match up with an IUP team out of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference that is 29-3.

“A ton of respect for them,” Laukaitis said. “They play really hard, just like we do. I think it’s gonna be a great matchup. I’m super excited to see us being able to compete with them.”

The winner of Tuesday’s game will play the winner of Colorado Mesa and Minnesota Duluth in the Final Four on Thursday.
