PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Some of Philadelphia’s professional sports teams shared words of support after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of all in counts in the death of George Floyd last year.

Teams commended the verdict and also emphasized the importance of meaningful social change when it comes to systemic racism.

The 76ers expressed their thoughts to Floyd’s family and friends during this difficult time.

“Last year, many of us made a pledge to address systemic racism,” read a statement. “Now, more than ever, we must reaffirm our commitment to that fight. There is still so much more work to do.”

The Sixers said Chauvin’s guilty verdict “represents a step towards accountability. While the outcome of the trial may deliver a sense of relief, it will not bring back the life that was tragically taken. We know that full justice will only be achieved with systemic change.”

When last season resumed following a pandemic-induced pause, Sixers like Tobias Harris and Matisse Thybulle publicly advocated for racial justice. They, along with General Manager Elton Brand, took part in peaceful protests in Philadelphia.

This season, the Sixers introduced the Buy Black Program, which gave Black-owned businesses the chance to partner with the team for resources and other business benefits.

The NBA and National Basketball Players Association echoed similar sentiments of the Sixers, whose head coach, Doc Rivers, is part of the Social Justice Coalition mentioned in their joint statement.

Additionally, the Flyers said Floyd’s “senseless death was yet another heartbreaking example of the injustice that Black Americans and Americans of color face each and every day.”

The Flyers emphasized their commitment “to being part of the solution.”

Eagles safety Rodney McLeod, who frequently advocates for racial equality, tweeted, “Justice was served today! … We can not let this end here, it is far from over. More work must be done!”

The Philadelphia Union said they will “continue to do our part to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within our organization and community.”

Other professional leagues and organizations released similar statements on Chauvin’s guilty verdict:
