PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts continues to impress on and off the field.
At a Wednesday press conference, Hurts explained how he maintains his calm demeanor: "Never get too high. Never get too low. Go out there and try and do my job to my best abilities."
There's also a leadership aspect he's trying to achieve.
"Impacting people, bringing people up around me. I always take somebody with you and just create that camaraderie, that community," he said. "And all those things, all those characteristics, they're all contagious — so, just trying to be a coffee bean."
Wait — "trying to be a coffee bean"?
Apparently, it's an analogy the 22-year-old picked up in college, while at both Oklahoma and Alabama.
The analogy involves a carrot, an egg and a coffee bean. In boiling water, the carrot softens, the egg hardens. However, the coffee bean disperses and makes that hot water into something new.
It's about leadership, strength.
According to a 2019 article by The Norman Transcript, based in Norman, Oklahoma, Hurts learned the analogy from former North Texas quarterback Damon West, who persevered through a drug addiction and a lengthy prison term. West reportedly learned the analogy while in prison.
West later co-authored a book, "The Coffee Bean," which became a best-seller.
The OU Insider also quoted Hurts referring to the coffee bean analogy during his one season at Oklahoma in 2019.
It's pretty obvious since taking over as the Eagles starting quarterback, Hurts has been spreading a lot of "coffee beans" among his teammates.
