PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Phillies placed second baseman Jean Segura on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. He suffered a left groin strain running down the first base line in the 9th inning on Tuesday night against the Dodgers.

It's a tough blow for the Phils.

"It could be three weeks until we get him back," Manager Joe Girardi told radio broadcaster Scott Franzke on The Phils Radio Network pregame show before Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Dodgers. "Hopefully, Jean's a quick healer, but we're really gonna miss him. God, has he been good. He has done everything for us — offensively, defensively, running the bases — just playing as good as I've ever seen him play, and it's really disappointing."

Segura was batting .332, which was easily the best among the team's regulars, as well as with a .379 on base percentage and .465 slugging percentage. And as Girardi — who felt Segura was having an All-Star caliber season — mentioned, it's not only his offense.

"The way he's played defense — he's getting balls to his left, his right, he's very good at turning double plays and he's the leader out there .... We're gonna miss so much about Jean."

In the meantime, Girardi indicated he can use a combination of Luke Williams, Nick Maton and Brad Miller at second base. It wouldn't be surprising if some of those players could also play shortstop with Didi Gregorius remaining out as he rehabs an elbow issue.

So far, Williams is off to a good start spelling Segura. He went 3-4 in Wednesday's win. Williams is batting .474 in his brief stint since getting called up to the big leagues.
