Joel Embiid signs $196 million supermax extension with Sixers

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — "The Process" is under contract with the Sixers through the next six seasons.

Joel Embiid signed a four-year supermax extension with the 76ers worth $196 million. Since there were two years left on his current deal, this makes the plan to keep Embiid in Philadelphia through the 2026-27 season, and it guarantees him $261 million.

ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reported the contract is fully guaranteed and does not include injury protections for the Sixers as his previous five-year deal did. Shelburne also reported the deal includes a player option for the final year.

Embiid tweeted he's "excited to continue working towards bringing a title home and eventually retire" with the team.

A "supermax" extension in the NBA allows for a player to get paid more if certain criteria are met. Embiid finished second to Denver's Nikola Jokić for MVP in the 2020-21 season, and made the All-NBA Second Team, which made him eligible for this extension.

Last season, in which the Sixers lost in the second round of the playoffs as the top seed in the East, Embiid averaged career bests 28.5 points per game and 10.7 free throw attempts per game. His field goal, three-point and free throw percentages were also career bests.

Embiid averaged 30.4 points per game in the second round playoff defeat to the Hawks, but his shooting percentages dipped as he played through a small lateral meniscus tear. Shelburne reported that Embiid didn't need surgery after the season.
