The Eagles have signed general manager Howie Roseman to a three-year contract extension, according to a report from Jimmy Kempski of The Philly Voice.

Roseman’s current contract, which he signed after the Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2018, was set to expire at the end of this season. Now, Roseman is under contract through the 2026 season.

Roseman getting a new contract is certainly noteworthy considering the timing.

The Eagles are in the middle of a crucial offseason, with three-first round picks and a huge decision to make at quarterback. Having the team run by a general manager that felt he might be on the hot seat would have been a poor way to make decisions, especially ones that will impact the roster for years to come.

But while Roseman’s new deal is important, it also feels like a bit of a formality. Roseman was never going to leave the Eagles if owner Jeffrey Lurie wanted him back next offseason when his contract was set to expire. This new contract also doesn’t ensure Roseman will be here through 2026 — although the financial commitment does mean any potential firing of Roseman before then won’t be cheap.

The extension is basically Lurie making sure Roseman doesn’t have to worry about his contract status when making decisions, which despite how some of the fanbase feels about Roseman, is a good thing.

Roseman’s track record speaks for itself, with one Super Bowl win and a trip to the playoffs in four of the last five seasons. He consistently keeps the Eagles competitive, hires a quality staff around him and is one of the best in the league at maneuvering not only the salary cap, but finding loopholes in the league’s rules overall to help the team.

Roseman does not have job security for life, but he has earned the new extension, and it is a positive thing for the organization that he will not have to think about his own contract when making crucial decisions for the future of the franchise.
