The Philadelphia Flyers have announced John Tortorella as their new head.

The official announcement came Friday morning.

"I am very happy to bring in John to be the next head coach and voice behind the bench of the Flyers," President of Hockey Operations & General Manager, Chuck Fletcher said in a statement. "John demands the best out of his players every single game. He is a Stanley Cup Champion and has a lengthy track record of both regular season and playoff success. During the interview process we discussed a number of factors that are crucial to bring this team immediate success and it became clear to me that his vision and style makes him the right person to restore a winning environment to our locker room."

The Philadelphia Flyers have agreed with John Tortorella on a four-year deal, according to ESPN.

NHL analyst Kevin Weekes first reported on Tuesday night that the Flyers had offered Tortorella the position and the sides were in the late stages of the negotiating process.

Tortorella, who turns 64 on June 24th, has coached the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks, and Columbus Blue Jackets over his head coaching career which began in 1988, highlighted by a Stanley Cup win with the Lightning in 2003-04.

Tort and Tampa beat the Flyers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals that year.

The Flyers have missed the playoffs for consecutive seasons for the first time in about 20 years. Philadelphia went 25-46-11 in 2021-22, one of the worst seasons in recent memory.

Tortorella last coached the Blue Jackets in 2020-21 and has done TV commentary for ESPN this season.

Tortorella has a reputation for his tough, old school coaching style. As far as results go, Tortorella is just 56-64 as a coach in the postseason for his career.
