PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Nick Sirianni knows what it's like to coach in Philadelphia from the other sideline.
The newest Eagles head coach could feel the passion from the faithful at Lincoln Financial Field as they showed their support for the home team. Now, those same fans will be cheering for Sirianni's team, and the former Colts assistant is excited to hear a different reaction from the crowd.
"I'm just glad we're going to be on the same team now," said Sirianni.
The Eagles made it official on Friday when owner Jeffrey Lurie introduced Sirianni as the 24th head coach in team history.
Sirianni takes over after a successful stint as the Indianapolis offensive coordinator.
In addition to his admiration for the fan base, Sirianni said he is joining one of the top organizations in the NFL.
"It’s just a great support staff here with the people in place here," Sirianni said. "A great culture that Mr. Lurie mentioned. It’s just a wonderful organization. It’s a first-class organization, and I just look to continue to build on that culture that they have here."
Lurie said he went through an extensive search for a head coach until deciding Sirianni was the right fit. Lurie had a host of boxes to check for all of the candidates and Sirianni seemed to complete the checklist.
"The research on Nick was terrific," said Lurie. "It was somebody that knew the game as well as anybody. Football IQ off the charts, a grinder. Somebody that had an unlimited work ethic and a desire to be great."
Just which quarterback will be under center for Sirianni remains to be seen.
There has been a host of speculation about the future of Carson Wentz and whether Wentz or Jalen Hurts will be the starter next season.
Sirianni could not confirm if Wentz would still be on the roster and would not commit to either quarterback taking the top job on his first day at the helm.
"We have two quarterbacks in Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts that are top notch," Sirianni said. "They’re top notch quarterbacks, and a lot of teams don’t have any, so just really excited to work with both of them."
No matter which quarterback he is working with as a starter, Sirianni knows there are plenty of positions to evaluate.
Like most NFL teams, the Eagles will have difficult decisions to make during the off-season. Sirianni plans to take a look at everyone on his roster before making any decisions.
"We have to go through a lot of things here," said Sirianni. "We’re getting our coaching staff in place. We’re getting it in place so we can get the best people in here as coaches, and what we need to do is evaluate the entire roster."
