Eagles 'back in the hunt' after home win against Saints

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — With their 40-29 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, the Eagles have won two in a row for the first time this season, and they did it with their first win at home.

"They are back in the hunt. They really are," Voice of the Eagles, Merrill Reese, said Monday morning about the 5-6 Birds. "They're playing very, very good football."

From the very beginning of Sunday's game, they were able to continue their running-game success, he said.

"Let me tell you something: This offensive line can flat-out run block, and they had explosive performances from all of the backs," Reese said.

As a team, the Eagles had 242 yards on the ground against the No. 1 ranked run defense in the NFL. A big part of that is quarterback Jalen Hurts, who had 18 carries, three of which he ran in for touchdowns. And that third touchdown was the most remarkable.

With New Orleans making a furious comeback, Hurts faked a handoff to running back Miles Sanders, only to pull it away and take it himself. He planted his foot hard to the right, juked Saints defensive end Carl Granderson out of his shoes, and cut back left to run into the end zone, putting the game on ice.

"What Jalen Hurts did right there is something you cannot teach. That is called instinct, Reese said on 94WIP Sunday afternoon.

Reese has been high on Hurts all season, while others have questioned the 23-year-old quarterback's NFL future.

"I was like, 'Oh snap,'" said Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox after the game. "I was looking for the trainer so I can grab some tape to help that kid ankles."

After the game, Hurts didn't talk much about that play. He said more about the Eagles nearly giving away the lead in the second half, and that there were more plays for him and the offense to make.

"I'm kinda frustrated. I'm really frustrated from the drives we didn't score in the red zone, and we should have," Hurts said.

Hurts is the first Eagles quarterback ever to rush for three touchdowns in a single game.
