PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — This goal meant more.

When Kevin Hayes scored his first goal of the 2021-22 campaign for the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday night against the Calgary Flames, the 1-1 tie score he created was not the first thing on his mind.

His brother Jimmy was.

84 days ago, Jimmy Hayes died at his home near Boston from after a cocaine and fentanyl overdose, according to recent results of an investigation cited by NBC Sports Boston.

"It's something that I think will really push me this year," Kevin said to NHL.com earlier this year after the August 24 death of his brother, who had played seven years in the NHL for four teams.

"Try to think of my brother and hopefully he'll push me through."

On this night, he thought of his brother right after putting the puck in the net for his Flyers team that has stood by him through nearly three months of grief.

Kevin was hurt later on in the second period. There was no initial word on the specifics or severity of his injury.

But before Kevin got hurt, he did the thing he and his brother both loved to do so much.

Score goals.
