PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It began just like Game 1, with a Kyle Schwarber leadoff home run.

But in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series, the Philadelphia Phillies overcame their own mistakes in the field with masterful and timely pitching to scratch and claw their way to a 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

It means the Phillies are halfway to a spot in the World Series, and can theoretically do it with two more wins this weekend at Citizens Bank Park.

But it wasn’t easy.

Yes, the second “Schwarbomb” of the series helped.

But the Phillies did themselves no favors in the field, as a pair of errors played a part in the Padres scoring their two runs.

Thankfully, Ranger Suarez and his bullpen did more than enough. Suarez only allowed two hits in five innings, and the pen did the rest to shut the Padres out in the later innings.

Game 4 — and all the incredible fun surrounding it — is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park.

Seven wins down, six to go for a World Series title, Phillies fans.
