PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio, 94WIP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have begun the 2022 National League Championship Series with a bang.
Rather, with a “Schwarbomb.” One that paired with Bryce Harper’s solo home run two innings earlier.
When those runs were put together with Zack Wheeler’s incredible pitching night, allowing just one hit, the effort gave the Phillies a 2-0 win over the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.
Struggling entering the NLCS, Kyle Schwarber launched a sixth-inning 488-foot home run to the upper deck in San Diego’s Petco Park that left his bat at 119.7 miles per hour.
That is the furthest home run ever hit at Petco Park in San Diego, the hardest-hit home run in the postseason in the Statcast era.
Zack Wheeler delivered seven innings of one-hit shutout ball, while Seranthony Domínguez and Jose Alvarado did the rest on the mound to blank a Padres team that took out the squad with 111 wins and baseball’s best record, the Los Angeles Dodgers, in the National League Division Series.
Wednesday afternoon at 4:35 p.m., Phillies stalwart starting pitcher Aaron Nola takes the mound and will face his brother Austin, a catcher for the Padres, for only the third time in their careers.
