PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Phillies said they will wear a patch on their uniforms this season to honor the late Dick Allen’s memory.
Monday would have been Allen’s 79th birthday. The Phillies legend died in December, only three months after the franchise retired his number 15.
As Inquirer Phillies writer Matt Breen astutely pointed out, seeing a patch memorializing Allen on players’ uniforms all season will be a constant reminder of what many believe is a long-overdue selection into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Allen’s next chance to be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame will be later this year for the Golden Days Committee vote.
The vote was scheduled for last year but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In 2014, Allen was one vote short of making the Hall of Fame.
