PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The most powerful voice within the Eagles apparently wants Jalen Hurts as the team’s starting quarterback in 2021.

That’s according to a new report from ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, who is reporting that Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie is telling the team to prioritize making Jalen Hurts succeed this upcoming season, instead of bringing in competition for starting quarterback.

This would contradict previous ESPN reporting, immediately following the agreement to trade Carson Wentz, which suggested the Eagles plan on making competition for Hurts.

Nonetheless, this is the latest buzz surrounding one of the most important positions in Philadelphia sports. Mortensen indicated in his reporting Monday that the Eagles don’t have “internal unity” on Hurts as the starter.

Yet — let’s use common sense. It’s Lurie’s team. So, his opinions and desires are significant.

Mortensen also tweeted, “There’s been some opinions expressed that the Eagles should draft BYU QB Zach Wilson.”

It’s not clear where those “opinions” are coming from, and whether it’s from the Eagles. Also, Wilson could be slated for the second overall pick to the New York Jets. The Eagles have the sixth pick. If they did make a play for Wilson on April 29, that would contradict — again — Mortensen’s latest reporting.

If they pick a playmaker, that would support what he shared with the sports world on Monday.

Hurts, who was a guest of ESPN’s “The Adam Schefter Podcast,” gave his first public comments since the trade that is sending Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts.

“I think it was just an opportunity for me,” Hurts told Schefter. “I think it shows the trust and what (the Eagles) think I can be as a player, so I want to prove them right.”

This is obviously a developing story, which could take many twists and turns — as it already has — over the next several months. Stay tuned to KYW Newsradio 103.9 FM and listen online throughout the offseason to see how the Eagles build their roster for 2021.
