PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Fathers and sons working together are not unheard of, but it’s rare to see it in the NBA.
The Sixers’ new guard, Seth Curry, was acquired on Draft Night in a trade, sending Josh Richardson to the Mavericks — meaning his father-in-law, Doc Rivers, will be his coach.
Curry is married to Rivers’ daughter, Callie.
When asked at his introductory press conference Wednesday about playing for Rivers, Curry said, “I didn’t really think it would ever happen, but when you think about it and get down to it, it’s the same thing every day I’ve been doing my whole career: Go in there, do my job, and he’s gonna do his job to the best of his ability, and our job is to win.
“We have plenty of time off the floor and all that to be a family and all that, but I don’t think it should be any different as far as the way we approach our business on a daily basis.”
Curry, who has established himself as a sharpshooter that the Sixers have desperately needed, has had to earn his way in the NBA — all while his brother, Steph Curry, has won titles as a superstar with the Warriors.
His father, Dell, also had a lengthy career in the NBA.
It’s fair to assume that given Curry’s ability to shoot and score, he will have a significant role on this team. He believes he’ll compliment Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons well, calling him and Simmons “kind of a perfect match.”
