PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Wells Fargo Center has canceled what was supposed to be their first-ever Philly Tailgate Games. In July, the arena announced they would host the event on Sept. 25. The cancellation was not publicly announced.
The Tailgate Games were described to KYW Newsradio as a way for Comcast Spectacor to reunite tailgate-starved Philadelphia sports fans after being denied the opportunity during the pandemic.
The day of classic tailgate games was to feature some enticing prizes, including Flyers tickets, concert tickets, free beer and Live! Casino credits.
KYW Newsradio has confirmed that the Games were canceled primarily because of the surge in COVID-19 cases from the highly contagious delta variant, first reported in Crossing Broad.
KYW Newsradio has also learned that Wells Fargo Center is planning to hold this event next year, and intends to use the the next year to test out four games — cornhole, ladder golf, washers and Jenga — as tailgate activities before Flyers games this season.
