PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — With Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announcing the easing of restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic, sports fans and concert goers are hoping to return to South Philadelphia.
In a statement issued by Philadelphia Flyers and Wells Fargo Center Valerie Camillo and 76ers President of Business Operations Chris Heck, the Center announced a plan for new guidelines at some point in the near future. Those changes would include increased capacity at events.
However, the statement said the building must still abide by city restrictions which have not yet changed.
"We’re planning to have a full arena later this year for Flyers and 76ers games, concerts, and events, and we’re extremely confident in the health and safety measures we’ve put in place," the statement read.
"Safety will always be our first priority, and in the weeks and months ahead, we'll continue working to ensure that every guest who visits Wells Fargo Center can do so safely and confidently."
The Flyers and 76ers have allowed a limited amount of fans over the past few months. The Flyers season ends on May 10th, but the Sixers could be busy in the building over the next few months. The Sixers currently hold the top seed in the Eastern Conference, and many fans are hoping for a deep playoff run.
"Today’s announcement from Governor Wolf is great news for hockey, basketball, and music fans, and it brings us even closer to our goal of welcoming full capacity crowds back to Wells Fargo Center."
The first concert at the Center since before the start of the pandemic is scheduled for July.
