PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The West Chester University baseball team is getting ready to open play in the NCAA Division II College World Series in Cary, North Carolina.
The Golden Rams are the top seed in the College World Series after rolling through the Atlantic Regional and Super Regional, going 5-0 and winning those games by a combined score of 67-22.
Overall, West Chester is 44-10 this season. Head coach Mike LaRosa said it’s been quite the ride so far.
“It’s been a blast. This is a great group of guys to be around,” he said. “We kind of noticed, got a sense of it early on, that they just really enjoy being around each other, they enjoy going to practice together every day. It’s a special team in that regard where they really are a very close-knit group, and it’s been one of my favorite teams to coach.”
West Chester has a couple of ace pitchers at the top of the rotation in redshirt senior left-hander Julian Costa and senior right-hander Kyle Lazer, who are a combined 20-3 this season.
Offensively, the Golden Rams average more than eight runs a game.
“All in all, it’s just been a very balanced effort,” said LaRosa. “I think from all three phases of pitching, hitting and defense, we’ve been really good and consistent, and consistency is key in the postseason when you start to feel some pressure.”
West Chester is in the College World Series for the first time since 2022. They will open play on Friday at 6 p.m. against the University of Indianapolis.
