PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The West Chester University baseball team is headed to the NCAA Division II Baseball National Championship in Cary, North Carolina.
The 34-13 Golden Rams will open play in the double-elimination championship tournament on Sunday evening against the top seed North Greenville University.
The team won the regional and super regional impressively, winning four games while facing elimination. Head coach Mike LaRosa has really enjoyed the ride so far.
“It’s been a blast for a lot of reasons, one of them being our team is just a great group of guys to be around, so it's been a lot of fun in the postseason with those guys," he said.
"Secondly, the ability to do it on our home field has been awesome. We were able to host the regionals and then super regionals this past weekend and on our home field in front of our home crowd has made it really special too and I think just added that much more sweetness to the whole thing."
But LaRosa admits they have a tough task ahead in the top-ranked North Greenville.
"They have more wins than games played for us. So we know we're going to have a good challenge," he acknowledged.
"Offensively, they are a .330 hitting team, they have 90 home runs on the season. They steal bases like we do. On the mound, I think they have around a 3.50 ERA as a team this year. Top to bottom, good starters, guys out of the bullpen with some velocity."
West Chester is looking for its third national championship in program history. The Golden Rams previously won it all in 2012 and 2017.
