WEST CHESTER, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Deirdre Kane spent 27 years coaching the women's basketball team at West Chester University, winning 447 games before retiring in 2014, and Dick DeLaney led the men's squad for 21 years, winning 370 games before his 2008 retirement.
On Saturday, the legendary coaches will be forever linked when the basketball court at West Chester's Hollinger Field House is christened “Kane DeLaney Court.”
"It's very surreal, but it sunk in when they had the formal announcement last January when they had a bunch of people come to a men's and women's doubleheader and actually announced it,” Kane said. “And thank goodness I didn't have to make any remarks then because it was overwhelming."
"Like, this is crazy. This is something I never ever imagined would happen,” she added.
DeLaney says the honor sometimes takes his words away.
"When I think about it, and as this has been going on for a year, I go, ‘Wow,’” he said.
“And then, when I saw a rendition of the court, I was like, that's gonna be there forever and I could show my grandkids it, and the players that I coached, I'm so proud of them and they've shown the love back to me. So it's been overwhelming a bit."
The court will feature the signatures of Kane and DeLaney. There will also be banners picturing the two coaches.
