Target has announced that face masks will be required for their customers and employees, regardless of their vaccination status, in stores located in areas with a substantial or high risk of COVID-19 transmission. The announcement came after the CDC updated masking guidance and will go into effect on Tuesday, the company said in a press release.

Target will continue to recommend face coverings for unvaccinated employees and customers in geographical areas where people are not at high risk.

In the press release, the company stressed its efforts throughout the pandemic: "The health and safety of our guests and team members have been Target's top priority throughout the pandemic."

Determining which areas are considered substantial or high risk will be based on the CDC's definition. You can check the status of your county here.

The company has also said that it will follow all local mandates, as they have throughout the pandemic, and monitor guidance from the CDC closely.

"We will also maintain all of our health and safety protocols that include increased cleaning measures and social distancing," the official statement read.

Despite the return of masks in some areas, Target has continued to encourage its customers to get the COVID-19 vaccine and has offered to make that possible at its stores.

"We encourage our team members and guests to get the COVID-19 vaccine by offering vaccine appointments at nearly all CVS at Target locations and providing paid time, and free Lyft rides to team members when they get their vaccines," the company said.
