PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Retired KYW Newsradio reporter Tony Hanson was inducted into the KYW Newsradio Hall of Fame on Tuesday. In a ceremony in the KYW Newsradio newsroom, surrounded by his family and former colleagues, Hanson received his Hall of Fame award.
Hanson retired three years ago from KYW Newsradio after 37 years at the station.
Primarily covering the courts and the cops in his tenure at the station, Hanson was an up-close witness to some major news events in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas, from the MOVE standoff and bombing to the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, from heinous crimes to jubilant sports championships. Former colleague reporter Mike Denardo wrote on the occasion of Hanson's retirement, "Hanson always presented his often tragic or gruesome stories with unparalleled empathy."
Hanson said at the time of his retirement, “People were going through, in many cases, the worst moments of their lives. It was the most important story in the world to them.”
