If you haven’t begun to implement sustainability into your small business, the time to start is now.
Incorporating eco-friendly measures can benefit the environment, lower costs at your company, and also set you up for further success in the future.
While launching a sustainability program can seem overwhelming, here are small measures to help take your green efforts to the next level.
Reach out
After doing preliminary research online, contact environmental charities and organizations in your community to get their expert advice on how to begin to become more sustainable. If you belong to a small business association or know other local business owners, set up a meeting to find out what has worked out for them in their sustainability efforts. Another alternative is to get a professional audit to assess the environmental impact of your business.
Be transparent
If you intend to make sustainability a core value of your organization it is important to have your entire staff know your plans. Explain both the environmental and financial benefit of the changes being implemented, and how it will affect what they do on a daily basis. Establish an open dialogue so staff feel comfortable to brainstorm ways to reduce waste and energy consumption. Getting your whole team involved will offer more ways to find sustainable solutions to your business needs.
Start small
You don’t need to completely overhaul the entire way your business operates. If you haven’t already done so, start a recycling program, switch to LED lighting, purchase green office products, and reduce paper use. These are all manageable ways to launch your eco-friendly journey without causing a major disruption to workflow.
Review and revise
Once you’ve started to instill sustainability protocols, make sure to reassess goals on a quarterly basis to see what is and what isn’t working. It is important to stay flexible and make pivots wherever needed. When green goals are met, set the bar higher, push forward and continue exceeding your own leadership expectations.
