
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A shooting in Southwest Philadelphia left one man dead and another injured.
Police say around 1:30 Thursday afternoon, shots rang out on the 1900 block of 61st Street, adjacent to Mount Moriah Cemetery, near the city's Kingsessing neighborhood.
One man in his mid-to-late 20s was shot multiple times throughout his body. Authorities took him to the hospital, where he died. The other victim, a 21-year-old man, was shot twice in the leg but is expected to be OK.
Police told NBC10 that the two victims were participants of the city’s Group Violence Intervention program. In a statement, the group said, in part, "The tragedy today underscores the importance of this program since it serves people in specific parts of the city who are identified as those who are most at risk."
No arrests have been made at this time.
According to the city controller's office, the majority of the shootings this year have involved young people between 18 to 30 years old.
