PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One person was killed and five others were wounded after a large, illegal "pop-up" party in the Nicetown neighborhood turned deadly early Saturday morning.
It was around 3:45 a.m. when partygoers inside a catering space along Germantown Avenue near West Juniata Street heard the gunfire erupt and ran every which way, leaving belongings behind.
"There were about 150 people in there that fled and believed they had to flee for their lives and that's a pretty big deal," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw at the scene.
Officials said it appears at least two shooters opened fire, from inside and outside the facility.
A 39-year-old man was shot 14 times and pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital. Five others were wounded and taken to area hospitals, later listed in stable condition. There have been no arrests. Police have asked anyone with information to contact them.
As gun violence in the city continues to rise, Outlaw said the public can expect a beefed up police presence in the days to come.
"High visibility in a lot of our troubled areas, not only in our vehicles, but out on foot, out on bicycle and specifically again where we know we expect large gatherings of people," she said.
