At least 10,000 lose power after high winds topple tree limbs in Philadelphia area

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — At least 10,000 energy customers lost power in the Philadelphia metropolitan area Friday after high winds gusting to near 60 miles per hour topped power lines and limbs of trees.

As of 3:30 p.m., more than 9,200 PECO customers had lost power. Nearly 2,800 of those customers were in Montgomery County. About 1,600 customers near Bryn Mawr endured a power outage, while about another 1,400 customers had lost power in and around Northeast Philadelphia.

About 600 PSEG customers lost power in Burlington County, New Jersey, while another 300 Delmarva Power customers endured outages around Wilmington.

Reports of downed tree limbs and power lines came in from Berks and Chester counties soon after 2 p.m. Friday afternoon. Crews were working across the region to help quickly restore power.

Wind gusts as high as 58 miles per hour were seen in South Philadelphia, with gusts of 55 miles per hour in King of Prussia and 64 miles per hour in Atlantic City.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for much of Southeastern Pennsylvania, most of New Jersey, all of Delaware and much of Maryland until 4 a.m. Saturday.
