PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two young children were injured during separate shootings in West Philadelphia Monday afternoon.
Just before 2 p.m., police said a 2-year-old boy was shot in the stomach inside a home on 52nd and Delancey streets. Investigators said he picked up a gun inside the home and accidentally shot himself.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he’s listed in critical condition.
Police arrested 20-year-old Rahmir Ponzo and charged him with endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person. His exact relationship to the toddler is not known.
About two and a half hours later, around 4:20 p.m., police said a 5- or 6-year-old girl was shot in the leg while on the porch of a home at 59th and Pine streets.
Police have not identified any suspects, but neighbors told NBC10 they heard teenagers arguing outside the house just before the shooting.
She was also taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. No arrest has been made in that shooting.
