PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Temple University is mourning the loss of a nursing student who was killed over the weekend. Police say another Temple student has been arrested and charged in connection with her death.

The victim was 20-year-old Milan Jones, who was supposed to enter her third year of nursing school in the fall.

Temple University released a statement Sunday, saying Jones was a nursing student there. She was set to begin her third year at the College of Public Health this fall.

“She enjoyed helping and caring for others, and her decision to pursue a career in nursing reflects just that,” the university said in a message to the Temple community. “There is no doubt that she had a very bright future ahead of her, which makes delivering this news especially difficult.”

Around 4 a.m. Saturday, police got calls to go to the 1400 block of Willington Street, a few blocks south of Temple’s campus, for a medical emergency. Officers went up to the second floor of a residence, where they say they found Jones with blunt force trauma. She was pronounced dead minutes later.

Officials say 21-year-old Tymir Lackey was arrested at the scene. Also a Temple student, he is  charged with murder and other offenses.

Police say an investigation found the homicide to be domestic in nature. Officials say Jones and Lackey had been in a relationship, but they didn’t give the full picture of what happened between the two leading up to Jones’ death.

Temple in its message urged students to seek help if they or others they know need assistance with a domestic violence situation. For students, faculty and staff who are shaken up, counseling services are available on campus.
