Beginning of new year saw continued violence: 3 dead, more than a dozen shot

A 16-year-old was fatally shot in the head in the first hours of 2022

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It was a violent start to 2022. Since early Saturday, 14 people have been shot, three of which are dead, including a teenager.

Less than two hours into the new year, eight people were shot. In a quintuple shooting, 16-year-old Byron Thompson, from Trenton, New Jersey, was fatally shot in the head.

He was one of five people shot along Cecil B. Moore Avenue and 16th Street, a block from Temple University’s campus. A teenager, a 17-year-old girl, was shot several times in the leg but is expected to physically recover. Another man is in critical condition.

Just moments earlier in Feltonville, a gunman opened fire on three people, killing 33-year-old Jonathan Grimes from Wilmington, Delaware. Two women were also shot, but they are expected to physically recover.

A 42-year-old was shot twice in the head and killed Sunday night in Strawberry Mansion.

Then early Monday, there were two other shootings — one in Germantown and another near McPherson Square Park in Kensington.

In all the cases, police say they are actively investigating, and detectives are out scouring the area for surveillance video.

This violence comes on the heels of the deadliest year on record in the city — 562 people were killed in 2021.
