PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) Philadelphia Flower Show officials on Friday debuted the theme for the 2023 show: The Garden Electric.

So, what does that mean?

“The Garden Electric is that expression of the innate energy that comes from interacting with plants and flowers,” said Matt Rader, president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. “That energy you feel inside you, that is The Garden Electric.”

Next year’s event will be the 194th annual Philadelphia Flower Show.

“The Flower Show started in 1829 at Ninth and Chestnut [streets] — in June, actually — but it’s an indoor show,” Rader explained. “The last two years were the first-ever outdoor shows, and now we’re back home to March, which has been our home for more than 50 years.”

The last two years were moved outdoors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Preparations are underway to move the show back to the Pennsylvania Convention Center after two years at FDR Park in South Philadelphia. And, the date is being moved to March 4 through 12.

Rader said hosting the show in March actually makes more sense.

“We say the Flower Show is the harbinger of spring in Philadelphia. It brings [the season] just a couple of weeks earlier so you can immerse yourself in flowers and bulbs, in that smell of earth and green just a little bit early.”

In addition to a taste of spring, the Flower Show is also a fundraiser that supports year-round greenery work in 250 city and suburban neighborhoods.

“So if you love trees on your street or use a community garden or love finding beautiful gardens in public spaces like Logan Circle, come to the Flower Show and enjoy your day and know that you're supporting this amazing cause that makes our region healthier all year long.”

Tickets will be available starting Monday at phsonline.org.
