PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The roads are about to get more crowded as the holiday travel season gets underway.

On the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Friday is expected to be the busiest day of the 13-day period before New Year’s, with an estimated 650,000 cars on the road.

“We’re projecting 6 million people on the road on the Pennsylvania Turnpike starting Friday [Dec. 20] through the new year,” added spokesperson Marissa Orbanek.

The Mid-County Interchange (Exit 20) is one of the busiest interchanges on the eastern end of the turnpike, so Orbanek said drivers should expect extra volume.

At Philadelphia International Airport, nearly 1.4 million travelers are expected to fly through PHL between Friday, Dec. 20 and Jan.4 — more than 13% higher than last year.
