PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Nasir Brooks was 17 on June 11, 2021, when he was gunned down on Arch Street in West Philadelphia. Steven Griffin was 18.
“The three defendants — Tariq Chambers, Isaiah Jones and Rayfiq Tiggle — went out that day to search for their victims and to murder them with a purpose,” said Assistant District Attorney Sean Perez.
“... As those victims walked down 55th and turned right onto Arch Street, turning their back on the car, Mr. Jones and Mr. Tiggle got out and fired 16 shots, killing both in the street right there,” Perez said.
Tiggle was 22 and Jones was 18. Chambers, the getaway driver, was 19.
Perez says a 911 call came through shortly after the shooting that helped them know exactly what car and tag to look for. Police found the car that same day and tied Tiggle, Jones and Chambers to it.
The three, now in their early to mid-20s, were convicted last week in connection with the murders and given two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
“It is, in fact, a tragedy all around for the families of all five of those people who have, one way or another, essentially lost their lives,” said District Attorney Larry Krasner.
Krasner noted there have been just over 220 homicides this year, which is down from 372 this time last year.
“There are fewer young people like Nasir Brooks, fewer young people like Stephen Griffin, being killed this year, and there are fewer people like Tiggle, Chambers and Jones shooting and harming people and killing people with guns this year,” he said.
