3 young men wounded in apparent shootout outside Airbnb rental in Center City

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating an apparent shootout on a Center City block that left three young men wounded late Sunday night.

Police say, at around 11 p.m., shots were fired on 13th Street, near Lombard Street. The three men hit, two 19-year-olds and a 20-year-old, were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.

Dozens of shots were fired, apparently, judging by the number of yellow circles drawn by police to mark where shell casings of various calibers landed on the sidewalks, on both sides of the street and in the middle of the road.

"We moved here to be safe. We moved in this area to be safe. And one month into moving here, this happens," said Matthew Monte, 18. His home, which was hit by gunfire, is next to a house which he said is being used as a vacation rental. His sister and mother heard the sounds of arguing coming from inside the house before shots were fired.

At least one other home was hit. And three cars on 13th Street were hit by sprays of gunfire. Bullet hole-riddled windshields and car doors were still visible Monday morning.

"My mother sits right here. My mother could have been hit," Monte said in front of his house. "I could have been hit. My sister could have been hit. It’s horrible. It’s terrifying."

Police did not say what the motive of the shooting was, as they try to figure out who pulled the trigger. No one has been arrested, and police said they did not recover any weapons.
