PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Most of us have experienced an occasional night where we couldn't sleep, but for 30% of us, it can be much more than an occasional problem.

For 15% of Americans, chronic insomnia is a major issue. It can cause daytime drowsiness, attention problems and serious health issues. For many of those who suffer, behavioral therapy and a change in sleep habits can dramatically improve things.

Methods that can help include avoiding naps and alcohol before bedtime, and keeping electronic devices out of the bedroom. Stress reduction techniques are also helpful.

Sleep specialists can also address physical issues and prescribe medications if necessary.
