3-year-old girl dead after tragic accident involving grandmother's car

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 3-year-old girl was killed in a tragic accident Friday in the city's Holmesburg section.

It happened around 8 p.m. outside a home on Aldine Street. As a woman was pulling up in her vehicle, her granddaughter ran to greet her in excitement.

According to police, the grandmother parked her car. After backing into a space, she got out of the car to protect the girl who ran over.

However, investigators said she forgot to put the car in park before getting out, resulting in the little girl ended up getting pinned between the car and a tree.

The 3-year-old was taken to the hospital once she was freed, but was pronounced dead just after 8:30 p.m. The grandmother suffered injuries to her arms from trying to help the toddler.

The accident remains under investigation.
