PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — More than 40,000 runners are expected to take off Sunday in the 47th annual Broad Street Run.
The 10-mile run is expected to kick off at 7 a.m. from Central High School Athletic Field on Broad Street and loop around to the Navy Yard. The wheelchair division will start at 6:55 a.m.
Police Inspector Jack Fleming said everything is ready to go, and officers will be scattered throughout the course as part of increased security measures.
“Big uniform presence, but there’s also a non-uniform presence, and we want to keep our eyes out,” he said.
As for getting to the race, there may be some hurdles: road closures, detours and parking restrictions.
The city said phased road closures will begin at 2 a.m. on Sunday. Parking is not allowed on Broad Street from Olney Avenue to the Navy Yard between 2 a.m. and noon.
The race start area will be closed to traffic beginning at 4 a.m. Broad Street from Windrim Avenue to Erie Avenue will close at 6:30 a.m. The remainder of the course along Broad Street will be closed to traffic at 7 a.m.
“There is some PennDOT work being done at I-95 and Front Street, so we are encouraging anyone driving southbound or northbound 95 to exit at Washington and take Delaware Ave all the way around to Pattison,” Fleming said.
If you are a runner, officials encourage you to park at the Sports Complex and ride SEPTA’s Broad Street Line to the start. The transit agency is offering free rides until noon for registered participants. Just show your official race bib to a SEPTA cashier, and you can hop on.
Some SEPTA bus routes will be detoured. That list can be found here.
For those coming to watch the race, you may want to steer clear of parking anywhere west of Broad Street.
“We really do encourage folks, when they are down there as spectators, and they want to see their family members who just finished, we just let them know that getting into the Navy Yard is easier to do on the east side of Broad Street.”
The City expects the course to reopen by noon.
