PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The School District of Philadelphia will dismiss 91 schools two hours early Friday, June 2, as the National Weather Service is expecting temperatures to climb into the 90s on Friday and Saturday.

The district’s chief operating officer, Oz Hill, sent a letter to parents on Thursday explaining the district’s protocol for extreme heat days.

“Going forward, our goal is to make these decisions as early as possible, preferably the day before, to minimize last-minute disruption for our students, families and staff,” Hill wrote.

Exposure to excessive heat during the summer months can cause illness. He urges parents to follow precautions for extreme heat, including:
— Keeping children hydrated.
— Dressing kids in lightweight, light-colored clothing.
— Being certain that kids wear sunscreen.
