PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 21-year-old man admitted in court Monday morning that he shot and killed his girlfriend in front of her 11-year-old son in Kensington nearly two years ago.

Abuid Torres pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the shooting death of 35-year-old Tatiana Vargas, who was killed days before Christmas in 2023 as the two were arguing.

Torres was on the run for several weeks and was picked up by the U.S. Marshals last February. He was found hiding inside an abandoned home.

Prosecutors say he kept threatening Vargas, saying he was going to shoot her in front of her child.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors will drop first-degree murder and recommend 20 to 40 years as the sentence for the judge.

Torres will be sentenced in July.
