PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The situation at Philadelphia’s only open-intake animal shelter is dire.
On average, 22 dogs come into ACCT Philly each day. The kennels are now full, and unfortunately, animals are timestamped for euthanasia due to the lack of space and resources.
ACCT Philly is making new incentives available to encourage more people to foster and adopt dogs and cats.
Executive Director Sarah Barnett said all adoption fees are $10 now through the weekend.
“You can come in and get a dog or cat for $10, who is already vaccinated, spayed or neutered, microchipped,” she said. “Comes with a bag of food and lots of coupons.”
Fostering frees up kennel space, too. Thanks to a generous donor, anyone who fosters a dog 40 pounds or larger for four weeks, or until they are adopted, will receive $200. Rescue organizations that take one in will get $750, and an additional $500 if they take two.
A free spay and neuter program is available to pet owners in 22 of the most under-resourced ZIP codes in Philadelphia to help reduce the general pet population. More information can be found at acctphilly.org.
“We are in crisis mode again,” Barnett stressed. “We are in desperate need of the public’s help.”
