PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One of the top advisers on Mayor Cherelle Parker’s campaign has pleaded guilty to tax evasion, though it appears the crimes were unrelated to his work to elect Parker.
William Dunbar Sr., 42, of Pennsburg, pleaded guilty to two counts of tax evasion and offenses related to making and presenting false tax returns.
Federal prosecutors said each year between 2019 and 2024, Dunbar inflated his and his spouse’s gifts to charity on their returns. They said Dunbar also exaggerated the business expenses on his returns.
He has owned and operated Dunbar Public Affairs & Associates since 2022.
Prosecutors said Dunbar’s false returns cost the United States between $350,000 and $750,000.
He is set to be sentenced on Jan. 11, 2027, and could receive up to 16 years in prison as well as a $1 million fine. Full restitution may also be ordered.
In a statement, attorney Brian McMonagle said Dunbar’s guilty plea reflects his “commitment to resolving this matter with honesty, accountability and respect for the judicial process.” He added that Dunbar has “taken decisive steps to satisfy his outstanding tax obligations” and is setting up guardrails to prevent a repeat offense.
